Description

This course is jointly sponsored by NEx: An ACI Center of Excellence for Nonmetallic Building Materials and the American Concrete Institute (ACI).

This course will cover the design of GFRP reinforced concrete columns. This includes an overview of the design philosophy around GFRP reinforced columns and how to construct basic axial load-moment interaction diagrams. The specific requirements in ACI CODE 440.11 pertaining to columns will be discussed. And finally, detailing considerations for GFRP reinforced concrete columns will be presented. Additionally, this module will cover general considerations for structural analysis of GFRP reinforced concrete. First order and second order analysis of slender concrete columns is discussed as well as analysis methods for GFRP reinforced concrete frames that are allowed by ACI CODE 440.11. Topics also include moment redistribution in indeterminate GFRP reinforced concrete structures. Lastly, considerations for fire endurance of GFRP reinforced concrete elements will be highlighted. These include the specific requirements in ACI CODE 440.11 as well as recommendations in the commentary to the code on methods for achieving fire ratings.
